Alfred Hitchcock's movies cameos and goofs

This page can also be read in French

I have been interested in Alfred Hitchcock cameos since the seventies, were I already had a typewritten double page of them. I had a look at several sites recently, and they all give the same info's, often in the same terms and many mistakes. So I decided to set MY version of it including all the VHS and DVD that I can reach. (See at the end for a page on other movies).

Cameo is a very small part played by Hitchcock in most of his films. It is usually funny but rarely speaking. I am proposing some that are not referenced yet.

Goofs are errors made in the picture, often by a script girl mistake, but also by the scriptwriter or the editor. Other sites give many mistakes that cannot be actually seen on a DVD, because several films have been shot in the now called '16/9' format, at the time called 'panoramic'.

The problem was that this format (Excluding the VistaVision originals) where in fact shot mostly with a normal camera frame, and the 'panoramic' effect was set normally by the projectionist in the booth. Many of them forgot to use the right 'cache' (Mask). And practically all VHS tapes are also not formatted right. This leads to the very common error of a mike hanging from the ceiling and following the actors.

I am not giving in this page the goofs that are not clearly visible in a DVD copy (There are still plenty to laugh at, and spice the viewing!)

The time code given between parentheses may somewhat vary with the copy watched (DVD, VHS...)

Many data have been taken from Patricio site on Alfred Hitchcock

Also Mistakes a site which did not accepted my inputs, but contains many goofs that cannot be verified.

And Imdb a very complete site on all movies.

Another site 'Hitchcock zone Wiki'  presents 1000 images of many Alfred Hitchcock's movies, some of them given in my page now.

Various subtitles can be found on SubMax

Goofs

There are more than 61 goofs on my sources in 'The Birds'. Many of them are very difficult to check, if not entirely missing. Here are the more precisely defined.

The birds on the floorboard of Melanie's car are dummies. At a time they don't move, but the one on the right wobbles like a toy. (10:38)

Early in the movie Melanie makes a right turn as she goes up to Annie's house and we see a white post on the school side of the street and a stop sign on the opposite side. (15:09) As she drives up to the school to check on Cathy we see the same spot and there's no stop sign. (1:05:32) This is quite obvious on screen caps.

When Annie gets Melanie out of her house, she says "Did you drive up from San Francisco by the coast road?" but her lips are mouthing something completely different. (17:22)

When we see Mitch's red barn up close the sun is not shining and there are clouds behind it. The next time we see it a few seconds later it's a bright sunshiny day with a blue sky behind it. (21:04 - 21:14)

As Annie and Melanie speak about how they met Mitch, the shadow is very different than when we just saw the house first. (29:53)

While Mitch and Melanie are talking in the café, the bottle of peroxide on the table moves from being near Mitch to near Melanie. (27:43 - 28:26)

Melanie and Annie are talking, when there is a noise on the door. They open it to see a ramp and two windows lighted on an house (45:33). The camera pans down to show the gull on the floor, then up. Now, there is no ramp, and the background is empty (45:38)

In the shot of the party looking down from the top of the hill the barbecue is sitting behind and to the middle of two lounge chairs. In the next shot the barbecue is to the left of the two lounge chairs. At the end of the scene it's moved back. (49:32 - 49:40)

When Lydia brings out Cathy's birthday cake, the icing alternates from pink to white. (49:50 - 50' 58)

All through the party scene, the balloons change position, and balloons disappear and appear too. (50' 24)

While Melanie is making tea you can see a reflection of the stage lighting on the kettle for the entire shot. (1:00' 01)

As Melanie parks in front of the school there's a big stain of black tar on the rear quarter panel of her car behind the tire, that wasn't there in the previous shot. (1:05:28 - 1:05:38)

When Melanie gets up and looks at the birds massed on the monkey bars the area behind her is a tree and a field. This background changes entirely when she and Mitch walk up to find Annie's body and there is what looks like a junk yard with a valley behind it. (1:06:48 - 1:26:16)

As Melanie holds out her right hand to shield the boy in the white jacket we get a really good close-up of his neck. It was bleeding three shots ago as a crow was attacking him but now it's not. (1:10' 57 - 1:11:02)

The birds that attack the schoolchildren have no shadows (1:11:19). It was probably too expensive to add them on already difficult effects.

While Melanie talks to her father on the phone, Mrs. Bundy walks into the restaurant and a series of ashtrays appears right next to the phone between shots. (1:12:43 - 1:13:11)

At the same time Melanie is talking to her father the phone is pushed right up against the edge of the bar. The next time we see it's at a 45-degree angle to the side of the bar but no one has touched it. (1:12:49 - 1:12:54)

When Melanie looks out the window to see the gas station attendant attacked by the birds the coat hanger that was there earlier in the scene, next to the window, is gone. (1:20' 04 - 1:21:15)

The body of the gas station attendant moves to the left between shots, as Mitch runs to help him (1:21:32)

In the close-up of the orange car we can see the cameraman in the bumper as the gas hits the tire. Also, the bumper is shinier than in the next shot. (1:21:51)

When Melanie and Mitch get to the school on the hill the sky is clear. On the next shot it has a lot of clouds around it. (1:26:04)

As Melanie opens the door to the bedroom there is no light except her flashlight but you can see two distinct reflections in the door knob, one of the flashlight and one of the studio light behind her. (1:43:00)

As Mitch walks up to the garage door all the birds on the ground that are near him run away and there's nothing to his right except a garbage pail. Then just before he walks through the door two birds appear pecking at his feet. (1:48:34)

AH is seated at a banquet table, on a college picture (12:45)

Goofs

At 06:12 we see Margot and her lover talking behind the bottles on the bar. As we also see at several times that the bar is right along the wall, the shot must have been made THROUGH the wall ! (This probably to give a better 3D effect)

Imdb

At 09:01 Tony dials to call Swann. From the sound and his fingers movements, it is clear that the fourth digit is smaller than the third.

But then he says that he is calling HAMstead 7899, i.e. 426-7899.

Imdb

At 15:26, while Tony talks with Swann, he leans on a cane that reaches just his hand, near the sofa head. At 16:50, he is seated resting his chin on the cane, which is now at least 15 cm longer.

New

At 24:48 Tony throws a £100 bundle on a pink armchair. The money falls right at the back of the seat. At 31:33 Swann takes the money. The bundle is now right in front of the armchair.

Imdb

Imdb states that at 32:15, Margot's press cuttings have a blank back (false newspapers). It may be true for the first one, but the second clearly has different titles on the back that the form of the cutting shows.

Imdb

At 33:59, Tony closes the curtains. After arguing with Margot, before leaving (35:31) he closes the same curtains again. This is an Imdb error. Tony closes the right curtain, and we see that the left one is still open, and then he closes the left curtain.

New

At 41:41, just before Margot is strangled, she answers the phone but there is no one speaking. We clearly HEAR that she is hitting the phone button several times with her hidden hand. As we saw previously that this is not an 'operator' call, this should disconnect. However, the husband keeps talking, and can be heard even before he hits the 'connect' button.

Imdb

At 42:23, as Margot reaches for the scissors, a bright spot can be glimpsed over Swann's shoulders. It should not be there, and it could be a part of the prop used to fake the murder.

Imdb

When Margot stabs Swann with the scissors (42:25), the point of contact appear to be between his shoulder blades. When he collapses on the scissors, they are much further down his back.

Ref

At 56:46 Tony takes down the photo to show Swann to the inspector. At 57:04 The inspecteur put it on a table. Although Tony had plenty of time to put it back on the wall, it looks like the picture has gone back by itself at 59:43.

Imdb

During the trial the date of the murder is clearly stated as September 26th, (69:12) but when looking at Tony's checkbook, the inspector says that March 26th was "the day before all this happened". (1:22:45)

New

At 1:18:47 the inspector (John Williams) lights his pipe. At 1:20:08 he puts it in his pocket, careless that it is still lighted!

Imdb

At 1:27:24 the inspector (John Williams) uses a light pen to light the phone, and later points it at the lock of the door. In both case, the light spot is coming from the ceiling, much too large to be the light pens.

AH is present in a crowd listening to a political speech, near the Thames (3:07). A second shoot shows him looking at the floating corpse(4:06).

Goofs

New

Right at the beginning, a large bank of sand is seen at the bottom of the stairs. When the corpse comes floating, the water has reached the stairs.... Very quick tide on the Thames ? (2:02 - 3:36)

(Imdb) In his room, Barney knots his tie. In the next shot, in the stairs, the tie's color strips are not in the same place (04:25 - 04:33)

In the bar, the barmaid fills 2 pints, but the froth disappears when the shot changes as they are placed on the bar. (11:49)

(Imdb) In the bar, Barney complains about his large brandy. He has a crumpled note in the hand with the glass. In the next shot, the note is gone. (12:42)

(Imdb) Just after killing Barney's wife, Rusk puts the apple on the desk, green side front. When he takes it back before leaving, the red side is front. (34:04)

(Imdb) Mrs. Blaney's receptionist estimates Blaney's weight only in pounds (one hundred and fifty five). An English person would not use pounds, but stones and pounds (38:54)

(Imdb) When Rusk gets Babs to his lodging, he says it is on the second floor. An English person would call it first floor (1:02:09)

(Imdb) After Babs' murder, the camera runs backwards to the entrance. The passage of a man with a sack of tomatoes hides the switch from studio to the street. Just over the doorbell, a dark stain appears after the switch (1:03:09)

The amount of fish soup the inspector has in his plate changes between shots. The contents of the plate also changes and sometimes we see different fishes. (1:04:26 - 1:06:03)

When Babs' body in the potatoes bag fells from the truck, she is on her back. When the cops look at it, she is now on her side. (1:20:46)

(Imdb) During the inspector's second meal (Pork's feet !), his wife has a collar with two strings of beads. Between two shots, the strands became widely separated. (1:36:44)

Ref

When we see the bottom of the coffee cup (1:44:81) there are unmelted pills in it. One can suppose that the gardian should not be asleep, but there may have been more pills ?

Goofs

Right at the beginning (02:38), the Mc Kenna are seated on the last row of a bus. All the seats before them are occupied, a blond woman right before them. At 03:13, all the seats are now empty, and everyone reappear at 03:39.

There are multiple errors with Bernard's stabbing.

1. The knife changes type. (27:30 - 29:08) When used to stab, it is straight and horizontal, then vertical when stuck in his back, then curved when Mc Kenna takes it from the ground.

2. Bernard is clearly stabbed in the lower neck but the knife moves down into the middle of his back when he comes to Mc Kenna (27:30 - 27:47).

Ref

3. The knife does not make any noise when it falls to the ground (not obvious) (27:47).

4. (27:41) Louis Bernard tries to reach the knife with his left hand. There is a Band-aid on his thumb. When he pushes his hand in front of Mc Kenna (28:19), the Band-aid is gone.

When Mc Kenna struggles with his wife on the bed to give her a sleeping pill, there is the shadow of a microphone in the top left corner. (44:24). For once, this happens even in the 16/9 copy.

Mc Kenna is trying to find Ambrose Chappell. Someone follows him. The sidewalk is in the shadow of the buildings (58:28). Suddenly, they are both in full sunlight.

AH exits an hotel room while Marnie walks out the corridor (04:50)

Goofs

Marnie drives a horse, wearing a beige tee-shirt (8:10). It becomes an opened collar dress quite white with a big knot in the next shot.

During the storm (0:30:52), a large branch breaks through the windows and come to rest on the table. At 0:30:59 the branch is gone from the wreckage.

Marnie is at a table at the horse races (35:20) and the two drinks just disappear when Sean Connery comes back to drive away the detective.

Just after this, Marnie puts on her coat. Then she lowers her hand below the table level. At 0:35:29 her hands jump flat on the table.

Marnie opens the door of a restroom stall. On the door (0:42:42) we can see the reflexion of two lighting spots. Just before we can also see them as a flash on the powder box mirror of the lady on the left.

Right after Marnie rejected Mark on the boat, the camera turns through the porthole. We see the sea slowly going left. The night passes (0:13:58), but now the sea goes faster right. There is no porthole on the other side, so the ship must be racing backward.

Marnie is drowning in the pool so Mark jumps in with his bathrobe. When he gets Marnie on the floor (1:15:37), after 7 seconds we see that the bottom half of the bathrobe is dry.

Marnie wants to open Mark's safe. We see the knob (1:27:50) showing a '63', and without Marnie touching it, a shot show the knob at '0' (1:47:52).

Marnie is looking at the money in the safe.( 1:48:51). Un shot shows the money closer, but now the red books on the lower shelf are blue. When Mark pushes her hands toward the money, the book are red again, but the money bundles are différents.

Murder ! (Mary)

1930

AH walks with a lady on his arm, in front of the murder house. (1:00:13) This cameo is not present in 'Mary'.

Goofs

New

Although 'Mary', the German version of 'Murder!' (Also directed by AH) uses the same sets but different actors, AH does not appear when we visit again the murder scene. In the old copy I saw, this is around 44'. An abrupt cut when they exit the house could show that this was deleted in the incomplete copy ? The only remaining goof in 'Mary' is at 55:18" when Mary and Sir John change side on the prison table.

While the jury is questioning Sir John (29:15), one of the jury members (Mr. Matthews) leans forward to say "That's right" then is shown with the crowd in the next shot and he suddenly is smoking. ?

A mid-shot of Sir John in a mirror (34:14) shows him shaving off all the shave cream. A closer shot seconds later shows a dab of shave cream still on his chin and he finishes shaving again.

When Mr. Markham introduces his wife to Sir John (50:36) and the three of them dine together, Mrs. Markham has a corsage attached to her fur coat. Once the three of them head to the boarding house, the corsage is gone, with no explanation of its disappearance.

Sir John and the Markhams discuss their next move in front of the boarding house. Hitchcock crosses the scène (see the picture above). On the left of the screen an old-style floor microphone is plainly visible. (10:13)

When Sir John interviews Diana in jail (1:11:38), they are shown sitting at opposite ends of a table in long-shot. The widths of the various planks that make up the tabletop reveal that, in close-ups, they are alternately both seated at the same end of the table (The largest plank switches sides).

In the prison's parloir, Diana gives back the cigarette box to the guard. Her right hand goes down on the table. On the next shot, her left hand which was on her knee is also suddenly on the table. (1:15:58)

During Handel Fane's interview with Sir John (122:29), Fane's cigarette reappears in his hand after he has put it out, and then disappears.

Goofs (There are more, but not verified)

Thornhill arrives at the Plaza Hotel and exits the taxi. A red and white Ford taxi is parked behind his taxi. In the next shot taken from the sidewalk, there is a light colored Dodge taxi cab parked directly behind instead. (04:14)

Two spies take a very drunk Thornhill to put him in his car. At 0:13:56 the head of the man on the right disappears behind the painted trees above him (shot in studio)

When a drunken Thornhill brakes to avoid a bicyclist, the police car following him rear-ends the Mercedes. Immediately a blue 1941 Ford rear-ends the police car. Where did it come from? It doesn't appear until the moment of impact. (16:22)

Thornhill and his mother go to Kaplan's hotel room 796, to check the place out. There are two telephones in the room and both phones have old-fashioned non-coil cords connecting the phone and the handset. But when Thornhill rings the buzzer to summon the maid you can see that the phone suddenly has a modern coil handset cord. (27:59)

While Thornhill and his mother are investigating Kaplan's hotel room, he tries the man's suits from the closet. He tries on a navy or dark colored suit coat and then holds the pants up against himself to check the length. In the close up of the trousers, they are now a light stripped gray in color. The camera returns to a full shot and, once again, he has the darker trousers in his hands. You can also see the light gray suit in the closet behind him. (30:18)

When Thornhill and his mother are changing elevators, there is a crew member reflection on the pane of glass. (31:55)

When Thornhill arrives at the UN building, the door of the cab shadow falls onto him , as if the sun is behind him. But the shadow of the pedestrians on the sidewalk falls in the opposite direction. (33:31)

Thornhill takes the knife with his left hand. The knife points down (36:32). On the next shot, the knife now points up (36:40)

When the reporter takes a picture of the murder (36:40), Thornhill keeps a photo in his right hand and the knife on the left. When the teller looks at the newpaper picture (41:48), the photo in his hand is clearly gone, and the people behind him are not chinese any more.

The date shown on the newspaper after Thornhill is accused of stabbing the diplomat at the U.N. is Nov. 25, 1958. The subsequent outdoor scenes clearly show leaves on the trees and people dressed for warmer weather. (37:00 - 38:40)

When Thornhill is running through Grand Central Station after fleeing from the UN Building, he has brown shoes, then black, then brown. (This is not obvious !)(41:12 - 41:18).

When the train pulls out of Grand Central Station, the sun is setting. Then when they sit down to eat later, it's the middle of the day again. (43:35 - 44:42)

When Thornhill is in his bunk bed in the train, the lights of the studio get reflected on the broken sunglasses he shows to Eve. (52:24)

When Thornhill runs from the airplane, his suit changes colors. First blue, then brown, then back to blue. It is brown and CLEAN when he is run over by the truck. (1:11:47)

When the plane hits the gas truck and it catches on fire, both passenger crawls out the driver's side, where the fire is ! (1:11:55)

After the plane crash, the bystanders walking towards the scene have shadows, that changes side as you see the next shot. (1:12:30)

In the hotel room, after the crop-dusting incident, Thornhill attempts to read a note Eve removed from a pad, by scratching horizontally with a pencil point. In the close-up of the note, it has been scratched vertically. (1:21:48)

When Thornhill & the "Professor" have a chat on the airport tarmac, the camera dollies in on Thornhill for dramatic effect. As it does, the distant airplane in the background gets closer very nearly as fast as does actor Cary Grant, revealing that the background in this scene is, in fact, rear projection on a screen just beyond the actor. (1:36:19)

In the Mount Rushmore cafe, a boy in the background puts his fingers in his ears BEFORE the gun is shot. (A very funny mistake !) (1:40:59)

When an ambulance comes into a forest, the closer tree wobbles! (1:42:07)

When in the spy's house in South Dakota , Thornhill writes a message to Eva Marie Saint on a matchbook from which several matches are missing. When Ms. Saint subsequently reads the message the matchbook is full. Also, the THREE lines message is now a FOUR lines one. (1 :58:31 - 2:00:26)

In the very beginning, we are given a date of December 11th, mid-afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona. However, all of the characters are acting as if it is sweltering hot outside. Marion's boss even has the air conditioning going in his office. Anyone familiar with Phoenix in December would know that it is one of the coldest months there. (02:15 - Date, 08:00 - hot time)

In the hotel at the start of the film, Sam sits with his shirt on his knees. In a shot the shirt lies on the right, on the next shot it lays on the left. (04:37)

When the police officer backs in behind Marion's car on shoulder of the highway, no tire tracks from his vehicle are visible in the soft dirt. The only track is going straight on. (14:02)

At 17:41, when Marion is beside her car, we see the reflexion of a light spot on it. When Marion goes left, we also see the cameraman, who goes rapidly down to hide. Light reflexions seen too at 24:49

At the car dealership, while Marion reads a newspaper, the same extras (people on the sidewalks) are seen repeatedly, walking in different directions (18:37)

When Marion enters the restroom in the car lot, she uses her right hand to open a door with a window and a right side handle (20' 57). Inside, the door has no window (22:01), and when she exits, she uses her right hand again to close a door without window, and with clearly a LEFT side handle. (21:09)

When Norman is making his way from the house to the hotel office to greet Marion, it is pouring rain outside. However, in the next shot when they are in the hotel office his suit and her dress are completely dry. (27:56 -28:02)

In the Bates Motel drawing room with Norman, Marion tears the same piece of bread three times down the middle, while two slices are still on the table. (35:29 - 35:56 - 36:05)

At 49:50, Norman enters the shower. When he enters a second time (51:20), the shower curtain's rings are at a different place.

At 49:50, Norman enters the shower, and a picture of a bird falls face up on the floor. When Norman put the shower curtain on the floor, the picture is now face down and broken (51:54)

Ref

After Marion is murdered the camera pans down her face and you can see her neck is pulsing. (48:34 - 49:08). One of the most known error, it is mostly false. The only thing really moving is a drop of water near the eye, and a very faint glitch.

When a man carrying a big block of ice passes by the sculptress's backyard, her cat is sitting away from her on a chair. In the next shot, the cat has turned side before it gets up, turns around, and meows at the man. (35:07)

After Jefferies's second massage, he buttons once in the middle of his pajama shirt. In the next shot the top button appears buttoned as well. (37:19)

Goofs

When David is killed and deposited in the big chest, the rope does not hang out the side (02:50 - 04:14). But later Philip bends over and discovers a long piece of rope halfway hanging out of the side of the chest. (12:17)

During the dinner party, Philip crushes a glass in his hand, and we see that his hand is cut and bloody before he wraps a piece of cloth around it. (23:36 - 24:31) Later on, when Mrs. Atwater reads his palms, not only there is no bandage, but there is also no blood or sign of a cut on his hand. (26:45)

When Rupert gives an ice cream to Brandon, they are on the left of a wall between the living room and the entrance of the house. But the camera pans on Brandon's back (to hide the change of roll) then pans out and they are now on the right of the wall. (42:32)

When Phillip plays on the piano, the music doesn't fit at all his fingers movements. (45:02 - 45:28)

After a shot on Jimmy Stewart, the camera pans from an easy chair to the piano. When the camera pans back, the chair is sitting in opposite direction (1:06:39), then is returns to the previous setting.

Guy is on the train close to Metcalf and we see over his shoulder that the sun has almost completely set (1:26:20) - but the next scene shows Bruno (in line to go back to the island) looking up to see the sun still high in the sky (1:26:32).

While Bruno is kicking Guy on the merry-go-round, he is not holding anything, but when he dies, he has the cigarette lighter in his hand. (1:30:48)

Lina opens a drawer and finds a book written by her friend. There is an envelope showing outside the pages. New

Like for 'Rebecca', there are several pictures for this cameo. The color ones come from the movie itself, but the two BW given below are a studio shot taken when AH was trying his costume (DVD Bonus). There are some comments that in the second picture, it is Michael Wilding and not Hitchcock that test the costume.

Goofs

When Mr. Elster is telling Scottie that his wife's car showed she drove 94 miles on the speedometer, he should have said odometer, speedometer gives the speed, not the distance. (15:22)

When Scottie follows Madeleine into the flower shop, the alley in quite dark. Just before, when the car arrives, and after, when it leaves, there is plenty of sun and shadows there. (19:44)

When Scottie is reporting to Elster about his findings, the ice cubes in their drinks are there, then not there, then again we hear them ring when they drink at last. (37:41 - 37:51)

When Madeleine enters the McKittrick hotel, she disappears from her room without any explanation (unless she was a ghost, who she is not !). (27:55)

In the final scenes in the bell tower we can see shadows of the archways, when it is supposed to be night. Also, we clearly see the shadows of Scottie's legs on the tower ground. (1:56:00)

Several of the goofs given on Imdb are subject to caution. Anyway...
Manny is fingerprinted, and wipes the ink in a paper towel (0:38:08). Later, he is shown in his cell looking at his CLEAN fingers (0:43:54). We did not see him washing his hands(Possibly in the cell), but the ink will not be cleaned so easily.

Before putting Manny in a cell, a cop ask for his tie (0:40:48). The next morning, Manny is setting his tie again in the cell. It is quite unlikely that the cop gave it back before opening the door to let him out.
